I
I have always wanted to help others in any way that I can, from teaching to coaching;focusing not only on physical health but mental health. My teaching philosophy is to teach students sports and fitness-related skills that are useful to them outside of the classroom and to teach them respect, responsibility, and relationships with others. I have always loved sports, and not particularly for the exercise and health of them all, that was always just an added bonus. The comradery that sports bring and the memories that are created cannot be beat by any other pastime. If I am able to teach a student how to pass a volleyball, and they decide to go out for the team the following year, I felt as though my job has been successful. In my more recent years, I have turned my focus to mental health as well. No amount of support we can give to students will ever be enough, but reaching out and showing you care can impact them for a lifetime. I try to always let students know that I am here for them in any capacity. I have a sign on my office door that says “I’m glad you are here and you are welcome anytime”. I want all my students to know that they have a safe space if and when they ever need it. I also do my best to attend any sporting (or other) event that I can for the school. Being the assistant Athletic Director, this does make it easier, but even without the title I would be there to support. Nothing beats seeing a students’ face light up when they see you, or the next day when you hear, “I saw you at my game yesterday!”. The past nine years that I have been a teacher have taught me a lot about others and myself -the more effort and care you put into someone else’s life, the more you will fulfill your own.
